The below is an article from the Lancaster Excelsior, April 28, 1977, Page 12.
"The landmark Germania Cemetery will be maintained in perpetuity, in accordance with action taken at a special meeting held Thursday, April 14, in the Community Room of the courthouse, which insured perpetual care.
Some 27 persons interested in the cemetery attended the meeting and voted almost unanimously to secure a Pro Forms Decree of Incorporation, and establish a perpetual care fund to maintain the cemetery, which was established in November, 1859, when one square acre of ground was purchased for the purpose of laying out a "graveyard." The land was purchased from Peter Klein, for the sum of $8.50, by the Trustees of the "German Congregation" - Jacob Schuberger, Nicklas Schlupp and John Young. It was enlarged in 1898 and again in 1908.
The cemetery is located in Section 8, Township 65, Range 14, about seven miles southeast of Lancaster, eight miles southwest of Downing, and six miles northeast of Queen City, between two churches in the ethnic community known as Germania - the German Methodist Episcopal Church, and the German Lutheran Church - according to the 1878 Historical Atlas of Schuyler County.
The congregation of the Methodist church scattered, and the church building and grounds were sold in 1959, but the German Lutheran Church - now known as St. John's Lutheran Church - observed its centennial in 1966, and continued to be an attractive, well loved and well used church building, with an active congregation, and was the site chosen for the county-wide bicentennial church service in 1976.
In other business at the meeting Nelle George was elected as treasurer of the Board of Trustees, to replace the late Harmon Schupbach, who had served in that capactiy for 30 years.
Other members of the Board of Trustees are Henry Kethe, also with some 30 years of services, president, and Donald Schubert, secretary, with 20 years of service.
Mr. Kethe and Mr. Schubert state they and Mr. Schupbach have spent many hours, driven many miles, and in lean years, even taken money from their own pockets, to assure that the cemetery was maintained and roads kept up.
Donations to the perpetual care fund, and for 1977 maintenance, may be made to Esther Seamster, Don and Mary Maude Schubert, Lucille Ikerd, Avis Farrell, Martha Schmitter, Robert Anderson, Raymond Schafer or Nelle George."
